Zimbabwean Exporter’s Journey to the CIIE: Unlocking China’s Market for Horticultural Delights

Get ready for an exciting journey as we explore the potential of Zimbabwe’s horticultural products in the vast Chinese market!

A Gateway to Opportunity

The upcoming China International Import Expo (CIIE) is a game-changer for Zimbabwean businesses, especially those in the horticultural sector. Tatenda Mukazi, a seasoned exporter and marketing director at Procitru Investments, believes this event is a golden ticket to connect directly with Chinese buyers and partners.

Unveiling the Expo’s Potential

The CIIE, taking place in Shanghai from November 5th to 10th, promises to be a game-changer. This year, the event boasts an expanded special zone dedicated to African products, with a remarkable 80% increase in participating African enterprises compared to the previous year.

Mukazi, who will be attending the CIIE for the first time, is excited to showcase a range of Zimbabwean horticultural delights, including blueberries, avocados, avocado oil, and macadamia nuts.

A Taste of Zimbabwe’s Bounty

Zimbabwe’s blueberries are all set to make their debut in the Chinese market, thanks to an export deal signed during President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s visit to China in September. Additionally, a trade protocol on Zimbabwean avocado exports was signed last September, generating buzz among local farmers eager to tap into the Chinese market.

Mukazi shares his plans for the trip: “We aim to explore markets, connect with buyers, and discover machinery that can transform blueberries into juice for export. We’re also on the lookout for potential business partners.”

Understanding the Chinese Market

The CIIE provides a unique opportunity for Mukazi to delve deeper into the dynamics and systems of the Chinese market. He plans to visit supermarkets and facilities, observing their operations, systems, and payment methods. “It’s crucial to align ourselves with their practices to ensure a smooth business relationship,” he adds.

Cutting Out the Middlemen

One of Mukazi’s primary objectives is to secure direct export agreements with Chinese businesses, eliminating the need for intermediaries. “I want to meet genuine buyers so we can establish direct connections. That’s why I’m determined to make this trip a success,” he emphasizes.

The Chinese Market: A Significant Opportunity

With years of experience in exporting fresh produce, Mukazi understands the significance of the Chinese market for local exporters. He sees the CIIE as a vital bridge, connecting Zimbabwean farmers with one of the world’s largest consumer markets.

“The expo allows us to showcase a diverse range of products beyond our traditional mineral exports. We’re venturing into horticulture, citrus, avocados, and berries. It’s a great opportunity to demonstrate that we’re not just buyers; we have value to offer as well. We can be customers to them, and they can be customers to us,” Mukazi explains.

Deepening Partnerships

Beyond opening new export avenues, Mukazi views the CIIE as a platform to strengthen partnerships with Chinese companies. As trade with China expands, he recognizes the need to collaborate with Chinese partners to enhance value addition for local produce like avocados and blueberries.

“We already have local companies processing avocado oil. On this trip, we’ll bring samples to gauge the Chinese market’s response,” Mukazi shares.

And this is where it gets interesting…
