Silk Way West Airlines Orders Two More Airbus A350F Freighters for Fleet Expansion

The future of air freight is here, and it’s greener than ever. Silk Way West Airlines, a leading cargo carrier based in Baku, Azerbaijan, has just doubled down on its commitment to sustainability by ordering two more Airbus A350F freighters. This bold move brings their total order to four aircraft, cementing their position as a pioneer in eco-friendly air cargo. But here’s where it gets even more exciting: the A350F isn’t just any freighter—it’s a game-changer for the industry.

On November 19, 2025, in Dubai, Silk Way West Airlines signed a firm contract for these additional aircraft, marking a significant step in their fleet modernization and expansion strategy. Wolfgang Meier, President of Silk Way West Airlines, expressed his enthusiasm: “We’re thrilled to deepen our partnership with Airbus on the A350F program. This order is a testament to our belief in sustainable air freight and our ambition to lead the global market. With these aircraft, we’re not just modernizing our fleet—we’re reducing our carbon footprint and setting new industry standards.”

Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, Airbus EVP Sales of Commercial Aircraft, echoed this sentiment: “This repeat order from Silk Way West Airlines, the largest cargo airline in the Caspian Sea region, is a powerful endorsement of the A3550F’s capabilities. As the aircraft takes shape in our assembly lines, we’re confident it will help the airline maintain its leadership while positioning Azerbaijan as a major global cargo hub along the historic Silk Road.”

But here’s where it gets controversial: While the A350F is hailed as the most sustainable freighter, some critics argue that the aviation industry’s reliance on Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) isn’t enough to combat climate change. What do you think? Is the A350F a true step forward, or just a band-aid solution? Let us know in the comments!

The A350F itself is a marvel of engineering. It boasts the largest main deck cargo door in the industry, optimized for standard pallets and containers. Its airframe is over 70% advanced materials, making it 46 tonnes lighter than competitors—a feat that significantly cuts fuel consumption and emissions. And here’s the part most people miss: it’s the only freighter that fully meets ICAO’s enhanced CO₂ emissions standards, set to take effect in 2027. With a payload capacity of up to 111 tonnes and a range of 4,700 nautical miles (8,700 kilometers), it’s powered by Rolls-Royce Trent XWB-97 engines, reducing fuel consumption and emissions by up to 40% compared to older models. Plus, it can operate on up to 50% SAF from day one, with a goal of 100% by 2030.

As of October 2025, the A350F had already secured 74 orders from 12 customers, proving its appeal in the market. Test aircraft assembly is underway in Toulouse, bringing this innovative freighter one step closer to the skies.

So, what does this mean for the future of air freight? Silk Way West Airlines’ investment in the A350F highlights a growing trend toward sustainability in aviation. But is it enough? As the industry evolves, will carriers and manufacturers go beyond incremental improvements to truly revolutionize air cargo? Share your thoughts below!
