Is Alejandro Garnacho Back to His Best? | Chelsea Winger’s Rise After Slow Start

A Comeback Story: Alejandro Garnacho’s Resurgence at Chelsea

Is the former Manchester United star finally finding his feet at Chelsea?

Chelsea’s Alejandro Garnacho, the 21-year-old winger, has been a slow burner, but he’s now starting to showcase the talent that once had Manchester United fans buzzing.

On Saturday, Garnacho’s two assists in Chelsea’s 3-0 victory over Wolves (https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/live/c797x9g4r90t) were a testament to his growing influence. He set up the opening goal for Malo Gusto and the third for Pedro Neto, with Joao Pedro adding the finishing touches.

This was Garnacho’s first double-assist performance in the Premier League, and it came in his 99th appearance in the competition. But it’s been a long road for Garnacho to reach this point, especially after his departure from Old Trafford under a cloud.

Garnacho found himself exiled by United manager Ruben Amorim, and his move to Chelsea was a drawn-out process. It took until the final days of the summer transfer window for the £40m deal to be completed.

The lack of competitive action left Garnacho looking a bit rusty upon his arrival at Stamford Bridge. He went six matches without a goal or an assist, but now he’s found his groove, with two goals and two assists in his last four games.

When asked about Garnacho’s recent form, Chelsea manager Maresca praised the young player’s attitude: “He’s had an open mind since day one. Last season, he struggled, but he kept improving. Garnacho has been exceptional on the left flank.”

The key to Garnacho’s resurgence has been a simple piece of advice: “Work hard.” Maresca emphasized this point: “We know he’s technically gifted, but to play for us, he has to work hard. He’s doing well with the ball, but it’s his work rate off the ball that’s really impressive.”

Garnacho’s journey hasn’t been without its challenges. He was ridiculed by Lincoln City fans on his first start for Chelsea, lasting just 59 minutes in a disappointing Carabao Cup display. But Chelsea has been patient with him, gradually easing him into the team, and his performance against Wolves was a breakthrough.

Garnacho’s fantastic link-up play with his compatriot Enzo Fernandez was a highlight. He won a free-kick early on, and Fernandez’s shot was saved. Later, Fernandez played a perfect pass to Garnacho, whose shot was saved from close range, the best attempt of the first half.

In the second half, Garnacho’s in-swinging cross found the head of Malo Gusto, who broke the deadlock. Garnacho’s sprint into space set up Pedro Neto’s goal that sealed the win.

But here’s where it gets controversial… Garnacho’s recent form has been a breath of fresh air for Chelsea. He’s coming off the back of an equaliser against Qarabag in the Champions League, a strong performance against Tottenham, and his first goal for the club against Sunderland.

And this is the part most people miss… Maresca’s trust in Garnacho has seen him prefer the youngster over left-winger Jamie Gittens in the biggest matches.

As of Saturday, Chelsea sits second in the Premier League table. They’ve played one more game than Manchester City, Liverpool, and Bournemouth, but a win before the international break has left the club feeling positive.

After the break, Chelsea travels to Turf Moor to face Burnley on November 22nd. They also have an EFL Cup quarter-final against Cardiff City and a Champions League glamour match against Barcelona to look forward to.

With star attacker Cole Palmer expected back from injury in December, Chelsea is aiming for a top-four or top-five finish to qualify for the Champions League. Maresca’s “work hard” mantra seems to be paying dividends.

So, what do you think? Is Garnacho’s resurgence a sign of things to come for Chelsea, or is it too early to tell? Leave your thoughts in the comments below!
