Hong Kong’s rugby team is on the cusp of a defining moment! This weekend’s match against Portugal isn’t just another game; it’s a chance to etch their names into rugby history. Head coach Logan Asplin is confident that a victory could be ‘memorable’ and put them firmly on the map.
This first official Test of the city’s autumn season, following warm-up games against Japan A and ACT Brumbies, presents a significant challenge. They’re up against a team ranked four places higher, a team that handily defeated them in the 2023 World Cup repechage tournament just three years ago.
But here’s where it gets interesting: Portugal is coming off a rather humbling 26-8 loss at home to Uruguay last weekend. Add to that the predicted wind and rain for Saturday’s encounter in Lisbon, and Asplin believes the stage is set for an upset. “It’s an opportunity for us that we’ve talked this week about,” Asplin explained. “We’ve got the ability to play a team that’s ranked four spots above us and knock them over, and how that puts us on the map, how that makes us memorable. This is one we can really get after and target.”
The team has made some strategic adjustments, with a familiar front row of Sumia Fameitau, Calum Scott, and Zacceus Cinnamond returning to action. Harry Baron, Callum McFeat-Smith, and Fazial Solomona Penesa will provide support from the bench. Asplin’s selection reflects the team’s belief that Portugal might not be as aggressive as their previous opponents, the Brumbies.
